If you’re facing an unplanned pregnancy, you may be considering ordering the abortion pill by mail. But, as with any medication or procedure, there are many things to consider before you take abortion pills. Keep reading to learn more.
Can Abortion Pills be Mailed to North Carolina?
Effective July 1, 2023, most abortions are illegal in North Carolina after 12 weeks gestation. Even though the abortion pill is legal in North Carolina, you will still need a prescription from a certified provider in order to have it mailed to your home. Additionally, women must attend in-person counseling with a healthcare professional and wait at least 72 hours before they can have the abortion pill prescribed.[1]
Women should never order the abortion pill by mail from a pharmacy that has not been approved by the FDA. The FDA has not evaluated those pills for safety[2] and could contain the wrong amount of medication, be expired, or be fake.
What To Know Before You Order the Abortion Pill by Mail
Before ordering the abortion pill by mail, speak with a qualified healthcare professional and receive an ultrasound. This will determine:
- Estimated Gestational Age. Gestational age (how far along you are in pregnancy) can be estimated based on your last menstrual period. However, an ultrasound is the most exact way to determine the gestational age.[3] This is important to know, because the abortion pill is only FDA-approved through 10 weeks gestation (70 days or less since the first day of the last menstrual period).[2]
- Location of the Pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy develops outside of the uterus and can be life-threatening if not properly treated. Abortion cannot treat this condition. If your ultrasound shows that you have an ectopic pregnancy, you can get the right medical care.
- Viability of Pregnancy. Almost 10-20% of known pregnancies end in a miscarriage, and almost 80% of those occur within the first three months of pregnancy.[4]
Caldwell Pregnancy Care Center provides free ultrasounds to women who receive positive pregnancy tests at our center. Schedule your appointment today.
What are the Risks of the Abortion Pill?
As with any medication or procedure, women should be aware of all of the risks associated with the abortion pill, including:
- Incomplete abortion (the uterus does not expel the entire pregnancy and additional medical procedures could be required)[5]
- Hemorrhaging or severe vaginal bleeding[5]
- Infection[6]
- Allergic reaction to the medications[7]
For these reasons, women need to have access to emergency services before, during, and after an abortion.
